The difference between Reflective Tinted Film & Nano Ceramic Film

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

A common question that usually comes into mind when you are planning to install heat rejection window films for your house or office windows - the reflective tinted films or the nano ceramic films?

Solar Heat Rejection Window Films

Both reflective tinted films and nano ceramic films are basically made of polyester (PET) film. The only difference is the nano particles laminated between the PET films. One is sputtered with the metallic particles and another one is sputtered with the ceramic particles.

In fact, the debates for both films are totally unnecessary, because each film has its own unique characteristic and purpose of serving. So which is better, the nano ceramic or the reflective tinted film? It’s solely a matter of personal preference.

Cloud Reflection On The Reflective Tinted Film

Let's keep things straightforward and right to the point.

Always go for the reflective tinted film when optimum heat rejection and indoor privacy are all you need from the film.

Otherwise, pick the nano ceramic film when clear window view is your main requirement, "PLUS" you are ready to give up a little performance on the heat rejection, losing out the privacy benefit and paying the extra for the premium technology of nano ceramic film.

Both reflective and nano ceramic films reject heat in a very different manner. The reflective tinted films are engineered to reflect the solar heat directly from the windows. Where the nano ceramic films are by absorbing the solar heat then dissipate the heat inward and outwardly and cool off rapidly by air ventilation.

Thus, a room installed with nano ceramic film with insufficient cool air ventilation will feel warmer than a room installed with reflective tinted films. It will be better for the air-cond to be turned on most of the time like the office and commercial buildings.

It is the same when you are stuck in a traffic jam during the afternoon. The car cabin will heat up gradually due to the airflow has been reduced, and relying on the air-cond itself is often not fast enough to dissipate the heat. The temperature will get back to normal until the traffic gets smoother.

Reflective Tinted Film

Coming to the reflective tinted films. Indeed, they are really good at heat rejection and privacy in every aspect, but they are not an all-rounder either. They are not suitable for places where high visible light and clear window views are necessary. For example, the shopfront and showroom where they need to have their products displayed, the high-rise buildings with beautiful night scenery, a luxury lobby to be present to the walk-in customers, and more.

Installation work in progress

As what it is called, the reflectance of the film is very high, it is like a mirror at one end. The brighter side will always be seen from the darker side, on the other hand, the darker side will not be seen from the brighter side. You will always be looking at a mirror when standing on the brighter side. This is also why indoor privacy only works during the day and vice versa at night.

Therefore, the first thing that you always need to know. What is your main requirement? Clear window view or indoor privacy? Then from there, you select your preferred colour and specification which fall within your budget.
